How Long Does Permanent Residency Take in Japan?
[Summary] The average processing time for Permanent Residence applications approved in May 2026 was 292.1 days. Compared to 321.3 days in July 2025, the overall processing time appears to be on a downward trend.
It should be noted, however, that these figures include only applications that were approved. Applications that were ultimately denied are not reflected in these statistics. As a result, the actual waiting period experienced across all applicants may be longer.

Why it takes so long
Permanent Residence applications generally require significantly longer processing times than other change of status applications.
This is because obtaining Permanent Resident status grants a foreign national the right to reside in Japan indefinitely under certain conditions. As a result, applicants are required to submit extensive supporting documentation, and the Immigration Services Agency conducts a thorough and rigorous review to assess whether the applicant satisfies all legal requirements for permanent residence.
What to be careful about while waiting
- Changing jobs: A job change may affect the assessment of your income level and the stability of your residence status. If you are considering changing employers, it is advisable to seek professional advice regarding the timing of your Permanent Residence application.
- Notification duties: If your employer (affiliated organization) changes — for example when you change jobs — you must notify the Immigration Services Agency. If your place of residence changes, you must notify your local municipal office. Both must be done within 14 days. Failure to comply may negatively affect your application.
- Expiration date: Even if a Permanent Residence application is pending, you should submit an Application for Extension of Period of Stay before your current status expires.
